MTGHQ exists because Magic information online splits badly in two. On one side are the databases: accurate, complete, and silent on whether a card is any good. On the other are the articles: opinionated, readable, and usually months out of date on price and legality.
We do both on the same page. The rules text and the current price sit next to a straight answer about whether the card earns its slot.
How these guides are made
Card data comes from Scryfall's daily bulk export. Commander statistics come from EDHREC. Rules citations come from the official Comprehensive Rules, quoted with the rule number so you can check us. Every page lists its sources and the date the data was last checked.
Analysis and rankings are ours. When we say a card is overrated, that is a judgment call, and we try to show the reasoning rather than just assert it.
How pages stay current
Prices and metagame figures move constantly. Rather than pretend otherwise, every page carries a visible last-updated date and a note that data is a snapshot. Pages are revised in place rather than republished at new URLs, so a link you save keeps working and keeps pointing at current information.
What this site will never do
- Put anything behind a paywall. Every page is free to read with no account and no email signup. This is partly principle and partly rule: the Wizards of the Coast Fan Content Policy forbids gating fan content, and we agree with it.
- Rank products by commission. We use affiliate links. They never change what we recommend or the order we rank things in. See ouraffiliate disclosure.
- Publish a page with nothing to say. Every guide has to clear a quality bar before it goes live, and pages that would only exist to catch a search term do not get written.
Corrections
Rules are intricate and we will get things wrong. If you spot an error, tell us through the contact page. Corrections are made to the page itself and the updated date changes, so you can always tell when something was last touched.
