Life is a resource with an exchange rate

Black’s whole approach to card draw rests on one idea: life is a resource you can spend, and most decks have more of it than they need in the early game.

At forty life on turn three with nobody attacking, paying two life for a card is close to free. At eleven life on turn twelve with two opponents attacking, that same two life might be the game.

So the exchange rate is not fixed. It starts extremely favourable and gets worse every turn. That single dynamic explains why black draw is the most powerful in the game and also the most dangerous, and why the correct way to play it is front-loaded.

The practical framing: you have a life budget, and it is smaller than your life total. In Commander, assume you can safely spend about half your starting life across a game, so roughly twenty. In a twenty life format, five to eight. Anything beyond that and you are relying on nobody putting pressure on you, which is not a plan.

Prices are the market price for the most representative paper printing, from the daily Scryfall snapshot. They move constantly, so treat them as a guide rather than a quote.

Why repeatable beats one-shot

The most common mistake in this category is valuing a big one-shot draw spell over a small repeatable engine, because the big number looks better.

Work it out over a Commander game that lasts twelve turns. A repeatable effect that draws one extra card per turn for one life, deployed on turn four, draws you eight cards for eight life. A one-shot that draws three cards for seven life draws you three cards for seven life.

The engine is nearly three times better and costs marginally more, and the gap widens every turn the game continues.

This is not a close comparison, and the only reason to prefer the one-shot is speed: you need cards now, in a deck that is trying to win now. In a format that runs long, engines dominate, and in Commander they dominate completely.

The corollary: deploy your engines early. A draw engine cast on turn four is worth several times the same card cast on turn nine, because its value is entirely a function of how many turns it runs.

The sacrifice route pays no life at all

The second tier deserves special attention because it sidesteps the entire life problem.

An effect that sacrifices a creature to draw a card costs you a permanent instead of life. In most decks that is a bad trade. In a deck making tokens, or running creatures that recur themselves, or running creatures with death triggers, it is close to free.

Three reasons this route is underrated:

It has no ceiling. Life-based draw has a hard limit at your life total. Sacrifice-based draw is limited only by how many bodies you can produce, which in a token deck is a lot.

It converts a board wipe into cards. If a sweeper is coming, sacrificing your creatures in response turns a disaster into a refill. This is the single best defensive use of a sacrifice outlet.

It stacks with the rest of the archetype. Death triggers, drain effects, and graveyard payoffs all fire off the same sacrifices you were making to draw.

For a black deck that already makes creatures, this is usually the better engine, and the fact that it never threatens your life total means it can run all game.

Multiplayer changes the math

Almost all card draw advice is written for duels, and black draw is the category where that matters most.

In a four player game:

You take roughly three times the damage. The life you were planning to spend on cards is the same life three opponents are attacking. Your effective budget is much smaller than your life total suggests.

But the game runs much longer. More turns means engines run for more turns, which is exactly what black’s best draw wants.

And you become a target when you draw. Drawing conspicuously more cards than anyone else is how a table decides who to attack. This is a real cost that never appears in a duel.

The combined effect: repeatable small-cost engines get better in multiplayer, mass one-shot draw gets worse, and lifegain moves from optional to close to required. Two or three lifegain effects in a black draw deck are not a cute synergy, they are what allows the engine to run for the whole game.

How much draw does a deck need

A rough target, since this is the question underneath most searches in this category.

Commander: eight to twelve cards that draw or generate card advantage. Below eight you run out of gas by turn eight. Above twelve you are drawing cards to find more cards that draw cards.

Sixty card constructed: four to eight, heavily depending on archetype. Aggressive decks want fewer and cheaper. Control decks want more.

In black specifically, weight that count toward the repeatable end. A Commander deck with three engines and five one-shots is better than one with eight one-shots, even though the card count is identical.

The way this actually kills you

Worth being blunt, because it happens to everyone once.

The failure pattern is not a single bad payment. It is a series of individually reasonable payments, each of which looked cheap, followed by a turn where somebody attacks you and you are at seven life with three untapped lands and no blockers.

Two habits prevent it:

Pay life proactively, not reactively. Spend life on turns where you are not under pressure, so you are stocked when pressure arrives. A player who waits until they need cards is paying life at the worst possible exchange rate.

Set a floor and hold it. Decide before the game what number you stop paying at, and stop there regardless of how good the draw looks. Twenty in Commander, ten in a twenty life format. The card you would have drawn is worth less than the game.

Black and red together

The pairing comes up often enough to be worth its own note, because it changes the calculus in one specific way.

Red draws cards differently: it exiles the top of your library and lets you play the cards for a limited window, or it discards and redraws. That is impulse draw, and it has a hidden restriction. Cards you exile are lost if you cannot cast them in time.

So a black and red deck has two draw styles with opposite constraints:

Black draw costs life and gives you cards you keep indefinitely. The constraint is your life total.

Red impulse draw costs no life and gives you cards on a timer. The constraint is your mana.

Those constraints do not overlap, which is why the pairing works well. On a turn where you are low on life, lean on red. On a turn where you are tapped out and cannot use exiled cards, lean on black.

The practical deckbuilding note: red impulse draw wants a low curve so you can actually cast what you exile. If your black and red deck has an expensive top end, the red half of your draw underperforms badly, and you should weight toward black effects instead.

Draw versus selection, one more time

A distinction worth restating in a black context, because black offers both and they get conflated.

Draw increases your hand size. You have more cards than you did.

Selection improves your hand quality without increasing its size. Rummaging, looting, and filtering all fall here.

Black does a lot of the second while looking like the first. An effect that discards a card and draws a card is selection, and in a deck with no graveyard payoff it costs you a card overall once you count the card that made it happen.

That is not a criticism. Selection is genuinely valuable, and in a graveyard deck the discard is upside rather than cost. But a deck that is running out of cards needs draw, and filling those slots with selection effects will not fix the problem no matter how many you add.

Count your true draw separately from your selection when you are checking whether a deck has enough. Most decks that feel like they run out of gas have plenty of selection and not enough draw.

Budget approach

Black card draw is one of the most budget-friendly categories in Magic, because the effects are common, have been printed for decades, and rarely spike.

The cheap repeatable engines are the ones you want and they are genuinely inexpensive. Sacrifice outlets that draw are similarly cheap, because they read as narrow to anyone not playing a sacrifice deck.

What is expensive in this category is mostly the mass-draw one-shots, which are the tier you least need. That is a fortunate alignment: the best cards for a long game are also the cheapest ones.

Buy engines first, sacrifice outlets second, and treat the expensive one-shots as optional finishers rather than core cards.
