What a doubler actually is, mechanically
A token doubler is a replacement effect, not a triggered ability. The template reads something like:
If one or more tokens would be created under your control, twice that many of those tokens are created instead.
That word “instead” is what makes it a replacement effect, and it has three consequences that matter at the table:
It does not use the stack. Nothing goes on the stack, so nobody can respond to the doubling. The tokens simply arrive doubled.
It applies at creation time. The doubler must already be on the battlefield when the tokens would be created. Playing the doubler after the token maker resolves does nothing for that resolution.
It applies to the whole batch at once. If an effect creates three tokens, the doubler sees “three tokens would be created” and makes six. It is not three separate doublings.
The stacking math
This is where doublers become genuinely exciting, and where most explanations stop at “they stack” without showing what that means.
Each doubler applies to the output of the previous one. The growth is exponential, not linear.

Work through three doublers explicitly, because seeing the chain makes the rule stick:
- An effect would create one token.
- The first doubler replaces that: two tokens would be created.
- The second doubler sees two and replaces it: four tokens would be created.
- The third doubler sees four and replaces it: eight tokens are created.
You choose the order in which replacement effects that affect you apply. With identical doublers the order changes nothing. With doublers that have different restrictions, ordering can matter, and you get to pick.
The practical takeaway from that table: the second doubler is worth more than the first, and the third is worth more than the second. A deck with two doublers is not twice as good as a deck with one, it is four times.
The doublers worth playing
Every one is Commander legal. Note how much the wording differs: the restriction line is what decides whether a doubler works in your deck.

Prices are the market price for the most representative paper printing, from the daily Scryfall snapshot. They move constantly, so treat them as a guide rather than a quote.
Doublers do nothing on their own
The single most common mistake with this category is treating a doubler as a threat.
A doubler creates zero tokens. It is a multiplier applied to something else, and twice nothing is nothing. Drawn on turn three with no token makers in play, it is a blank card that costs you several mana.
This produces a strict deckbuilding order:
- Build the engine first. You need enough token generation that you reliably have some in play. A rough target in Commander is fifteen or more cards that create tokens.
- Add payoffs second. Cards that reward you for having lots of creatures, or that convert tokens into damage or cards.
- Add doublers last, and only two or three of them.
A deck with four doublers and eight token makers is worse than a deck with one doubler and eleven token makers, every time. Doublers are the dessert.
Which doublers are worth playing

The wording distinction in tiers one and two is the practical one. If your deck makes Treasure and Clues rather than creatures, a creature-only doubler is a dead card. Read the trigger condition, not the card name.
Doublers and copy effects
The strongest interaction in this category is the one most people find by accident.
An effect that creates a token copy of a permanent is still creating a token. So a doubler makes two copies instead of one.
That combination is extremely mana efficient. Copying a large creature is already good value. Copying it twice, off a single card, for the same mana, is the kind of swing that ends Commander games. The same applies to copying a permanent with a powerful enters-the-battlefield trigger, since you get both triggers.
If your deck has copy effects, a doubler is substantially better than its raw text suggests, and this is a reason to prioritise the any-token tier over the creature-only tier.
The fragility problem
Doublers are enchantments or creatures, which makes them removable, and a token deck with its doubler answered is meaningfully worse than it looked.
Two mitigations worth building in:
Rebuild speed. Token decks recover from a board wipe better than most, because the token makers are usually permanents that keep making tokens. Prioritise repeatable generators over one-shot ones for exactly this reason.
Do not overcommit to the doubler. Holding your best token maker until after the doubler has survived a turn is often correct against a deck with removal. Playing them in the wrong order gives the opponent a two for one.
Doublers versus population effects
There is a second way to get more tokens, and decks routinely pick the wrong one.
A doubler multiplies at the moment of creation. It is proactive and it compounds, but it does nothing unless something else is creating tokens right now.
A population effect copies a token already on the battlefield. It is reactive, it works with zero setup beyond having one good token, and it does not compound.
The comparison that matters:

A deck with a wide, cheap token engine wants doublers, because it is creating tokens constantly and multiplying a constant stream is enormous. A deck that occasionally makes one very large or very valuable token wants population effects, because copying the best thing on the board beats doubling a stream that does not exist.
Getting this backwards is common. A deck that makes one big creature token and runs three doublers has three cards that each did one extra token, total. The same deck with population effects would have copied its best permanent three times.
What to do with all those tokens
Doubling your token count only matters if the tokens convert into something. A deck that makes forty tokens and has no payoff loses to one board wipe and has nothing to show for it.
Three conversion routes, and a token deck wants at least two:
Anthem effects. Cards that give all your creatures plus one/plus one turn a wide board into lethal damage. This is the most direct route and the most vulnerable to a sweeper.
Sacrifice payoffs. Effects that drain each opponent when a creature dies turn your board into reach that does not require attacking, and they turn an incoming board wipe into a win condition rather than a disaster. This is the most resilient route.
Cards that count creatures. Draw effects or damage effects that scale with your creature count convert width into resources. These are the ones that let a token deck grind rather than race.
The general principle: width without a payoff is not a strategy. Doublers make you wider, and wider is only better when you have already decided what wide is for.
Budget approach
The top tier of doublers holds real prices, because they are Commander staples with limited printings. The good news is that they are also the least necessary part of a token deck.
Spend on the engine first: repeatable token generators are mostly cheap, and they are what actually wins games. Spend on payoffs second. A single mid-priced doubler added to a working engine is a bigger upgrade than an expensive doubler added to a deck that does not yet make enough tokens.
If you want the exponential curve without the price, the conditional tier is the place to look. A doubler that only works on your turn costs a fraction as much and, in a deck that makes most of its tokens on its own turn anyway, does close to the same job.
One last piece of buying advice specific to this category. Doublers are among the most reprint-prone cards in Commander, because they are popular, casual, and easy to slot into precons. If a doubler you want has spiked, check whether a Commander release is scheduled before paying the premium, because these are exactly the cards that show up in those products.
